Ride of the Day: Hills of Ellicott City near Baltimore

Originally the site of a flour mill established by three brothers from Pennsylvania, Ellicott City blossomed into a major mill, manufacturing, and farming area. Today, Ellicott City beckons to cyclists looking to explore its rolling hills and rich history. This 59.6-mile loop, beginning in Savage, spans several hills and offers glimpses into the area’s past along the way.

From Savage, warm up your legs while pedaling north on relatively flat roads en route to Ellicott City. Slice through the thick forests of Worthington Park along New Cut Road before entering the city’s historic downtown—bustling with antique shops, restaurants and cafes—before turning right on Frederick Road to head south along the Patapsco River. You’ll begin your steepest climb of the day on Ilchester Road just a few miles later. Stretching uphill at a 9-percent grade, this 0.8-mile churn is followed by another short but steep push up College Avenue.

Pass through Ellicott City again before tackling the Westchester Avenue ascent (it’s longer, but much less steep than the ride’s first two climbs). After picking up the Grist Mill Trail and pedaling through Patapsco Valley State Park, enter Ellicott City a third and final time before cruising through the countryside west of Baltimore on Bethany Lane. Snag more snapshots of the area’s storied past while passing relics like the historic Bollman Bridge before returning to Savage and completing your ride.
